What Our Customers Say

Our Car Air Conditioning Services in Cardiff

Not every air con problem is the same. Some cars only need fresh gas. Others need a leak check, fault diagnosis, or repair work before the system can operate properly again. Here are the main car air conditioning services we offer at Lawfix Automotive:

Car Air Con Regas, Recharge and Refill

picture-of-car-regas

Car air con regas, car air conditioning recharge and car AC gas refill are all common names for the same core service. Customers use different words, but the job is usually the same: old refrigerant gas is removed, the system is checked, then fresh gas is added to the correct level.

This service is usually needed when your air con still turns on, but the air coming from the vents is no longer cold. You may also notice weak cooling, slow demisting, bad smells, or that the system worked last summer but not now.

At Lawfix Automotive, we do not just “top it up” and send you away. We recover the old gas, vacuum-test the system, pressure-test it, check for leaks, and refill it with the correct refrigerant for your car. We also follow the correct manufacturer gas weight and check the vent temperature before and after.

Car Air Conditioning Repair

car-air-con-being-repaired

Sometimes an air con regas will not fix the problem. If your system has a leak, a damaged part, a compressor fault, or an electrical issue, the gas may escape again, or the air con may not work at all. In this case, your car may need air conditioning repair rather than a simple refill.

Common repair issues include leaking seals, condenser damage, compressor problems, pressure sensor faults and electrical faults. A bad smell may also point to bacteria or dirt in the system, rather than low gas alone.

If your car fails a leak test or we spot another issue, we will explain what we have found in plain English. We will then advise you on the best next steps before any extra work is carried out. That way, you know whether a regas is enough or whether the system needs repair work first.

Why Your Car Air Conditioning Needs a Recharge

car-air-con-dashboard

Over time, your car’s air conditioning system starts to lose refrigerant gas, typically through small issues like leaks and worn-down seals. When this gas becomes depleted, your air conditioning system will struggle to cool your vehicle properly, blowing out lukewarm air instead.

By getting a regular air conditioning regas service undertaken on your vehicle, not only will you restore the cold air from your AC, you’ll also maximise fuel efficiency and reduce strain on your vehicle’s compressor.

Signs You Need an Air Conditioning Regas

car-air-con-temperature-check

There are several signs that your car could benefit from an air conditioning regas. These include:

Air conditioning system blowing out lukewarm air

Air coming from the system smells bad

Strange noise coming from the AC fan when turned on

Vehicle windows taking longer to demist

If you notice any of these signs, an air conditioning recharge is likely required. Our expert mechanics can inspect your vehicle and confirm this for you, just to make sure that the AC is actually the issue at hand.

What Happens During Your Air Con Regas Appointment?

When it comes to vehicle AC systems, every vehicle that we work on follows a tried-and-tested process. Here’s exactly what you’ll get as part of our service:

  1. Check the air con issue you have reported
  2. Recover the old gas from the system
  3. Vacuum test the system
  4. Pressure test and check for leaks
  5. Use dye if leak detection is needed
  6. Refill the system with the correct refrigerant gas
  7. Check the vent temperature before and after

You should usually allow half a day for the job, although the actual regas work is often quicker. This gives us time to properly check the vehicle, especially during busy periods.

R134A and R1234YF Air Con Regas

Cars use different types of air-con gas. The two common ones are:

Gas Type

Usually Found In

What You Need To Know

R134A

Many older petrol and diesel cars

Usually the lower-cost gas type

R1234YF

Many newer petrol and diesel cars

Usually costs more than R134A

We support both R134A and R1234YF air con regas. We currently work on petrol and diesel cars only. We do not work on vans or hybrid/electric vehicles for this service. You do not need to know which gas your car uses before calling us. We can check this for you.

Car Air Con Regas Prices in Cardiff

Air con prices can vary between garages because the final cost depends on the gas type, vehicle make and model, how much refrigerant is needed and whether extra fault-finding is required.

As a guide, many garages charge less for R134A and more for R1234YF because R1234YF is the newer, more expensive refrigerant.

At Lawfix Automotive, our air con regas work usually costs between £60 and £160 plus VAT, depending on the vehicle. For the most accurate price, call us with your registration number, and we will confirm the correct gas type and quote before starting the work.

Air Con Regas vs Recharge vs Refill vs Repair

Customers often use these words interchangeably, but there are subtle differences worth knowing. The right service depends on what your car is doing and whether the air con system has a fault.

Service

Best For

What It Means

Air con regas

Warm air, weak cooling or air con not serviced for 2-3 years

Old refrigerant is recovered, the system is tested, then fresh gas is added to the correct level.

Air conditioning recharge

Air con still works but does not feel cold enough

Another common name for a regas. The system is recharged with fresh refrigerant so it can cool properly again.

AC gas refill

Drivers who say the air con needs “topping up”

Similar to a regas or recharge, but we still test the system first before adding gas.

Air conditioning repair

Leaks, compressor faults, condenser damage, electrical faults or air con that does not work at all

The fault is found and repaired before the system is regassed.

In most cases, regas, recharge and refill mean the same basic service. Repair is different because it likely indicates a fault preventing the system from working properly.

If your car fails a leak test or the gas escapes again quickly, we will advise you on the best next steps. We will not pretend a regas will fix a fault when it clearly needs further checks.

Why We Do Not Recommend DIY Air Con Cans

DIY air con cans may look cheaper at first, but they are not the same as a proper garage air con regas. They can be fine as a short-term idea in some cases, but they do not provide the same checks, controls, or safety as a professional service.

The main problem is that a DIY can usually only add gas. It does not properly recover the old refrigerant, vacuum-test the system, pressure-test it, or check for leaks in the same way a garage can. That means you may refill the system without knowing why the gas was low in the first place.

If your air con has a leak, the new gas can escape again. You may get cold air for a short time, then the same problem comes back. This is one of the reasons many customers think they need “another top-up” when the real issue is a leak, a worn seal, a damaged condenser, or another fault.

There is also the risk of using the wrong gas or adding the wrong amount. Your car needs the correct refrigerant type and the correct gas weight. Too much or too little gas can stop the system working properly and may put extra strain on parts like the compressor.

A DIY can also not tell you if the air con fault is linked to the compressor, condenser, pressure sensor, electrical system or cabin filter. So while it may look like the cheaper option, it can end up wasting money if the fault is not actually low gas.

At Lawfix Automotive, we check the system first. We recover the old gas, test the system, check for leaks, refill it with the correct refrigerant and check the vent temperature before and after. If we find a fault, we will explain it clearly and advise you on the best next steps before any extra work is done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Really depends on the make and model of your vehicle. Typically, you’ll need to change your air conditioning systems gas every 2-3 years.

Lawfix Autos replaces the old gas, vacuum-test the system for any leaks and then refill the air conditioning system with fresh refrigerant gas.

Very Fast. It usually takes us only 30-60 minutes to undertake a air conditioning regas service.

Really depends on the make and model of your vehicle. It’s typically between £120-£160. If you want a precise quote, give us a call and we will let you know!

No. Air Conditiong regas isn’t typically included in an annual service.

Yes, however, it can damage the compressor over time, increasing the risk of more expensive repair work required down the line.

Any car manufactured before 2014 typically uses R134A refrigerant. If your car was manufactured after 2014, it’s usually R1234YF refrigerant that’s used. No need to stress, our team will be able to determine the right gas for your vehicle.

R1234YF is a more environmentally-friendly gas. It’s used in all vehicles that were manufactured after 2014.

We really wouldn’t recommend it. It’s vital to test your air conditioning system for leaks and to ensure the system is vacuumed properly. This isn’t something the average person can do without expertise.

The bad smell usually comes from a build up of chemicals, mould or bacteria over time. Our regas service will resolve this issue for you.

Yes. A air con recharge service will restore cold air instantly.

For sure. When your AC isn’t properly maintained, your vehicle will have to work harder, minimising fuel efficiency.
