Joe managed to book my car in straight away and carried out a really thorough inspection before purchase. He even sent me a detailed video of the underside (something I’d never normally get to see), talking me through everything clearly and in a way I could understand. He also gave it an extensive test drive and ran full diagnostics to check for any hidden issues. The communication was outstanding, the service above and beyond, and the pricing very fair. As an independent gearbox specialist in Cardiff, we handle the full range of transmission work in-house, on manual and automatic cars alike. Here’s a breakdown of the gearbox services we offer Cardiff drivers:
Gearbox diagnostics – we start most jobs with a proper diagnostic check: reading fault codes, checking fluid condition, inspecting for leaks and taking the car for a road test where it’s safe to do so, so we know what we’re actually dealing with before recommending any work.
Gearbox repairs – not every fault means starting again from scratch. Where the issue is a worn seal, a faulty sensor, a clutch pack on a DSG, or a valve body problem, we can often repair the affected part rather than replace the whole unit.
Gearbox servicing – regular servicing, including fluid and filter changes, helps both manual and automatic gearboxes last longer and shift more smoothly.
Gearbox replacement – when a gearbox is too far gone to repair sensibly, we can fit a replacement unit. If you’re looking for an automatic gearbox specialist in Cardiff specifically, we work on DSG, CVT and torque-converter automatics as often as manual boxes, covering most makes and models on Cardiff’s roads.
Whatever the fault, we’ll explain your options honestly before recommending the most expensive route.
A failing gearbox rarely goes wrong without warning. Common signs to look out for include:
Gears slipping, or the engine revving without the car picking up speed
Grinding, whining or clunking noises when changing gear
A burning smell after driving, especially in traffic
A gearbox or transmission warning light on the dashboard
Difficulty selecting a gear, or the car jumping out of gear
Delayed or jerky gear changes, particularly on automatics
The car dropping into limp mode and losing power
Manual and automatic gearboxes tend to show different symptoms. A slipping clutch pack or harsh shifts are common on automatics and DSGs, while grinding or a high, vague biting point often points to wear in a manual box. Either way, the earlier it’s looked at, the more options you’ll usually have. If you’re noticing any of these, it’s best not to keep driving on it if you can help it.
When you get in touch, we’ll ask for your registration, the symptoms you’re noticing, any warning lights on the dash, and whether the car can still be driven safely.
From there, our process usually looks like this:
Fault code scan – reading the transmission control unit for stored fault codes.
Fluid and leak check – checking gearbox fluid level, condition and looking for leaks.
Road test – where it’s safe, we take the car out to feel how it’s actually behaving.
Written finding – we explain what we’ve found, in plain English, before recommending a repair route.
If the fault needs a closer look, such as removing the gearbox or stripping it down, we’ll contact you and agree the cost before doing any further work. Nothing extra gets added to your bill without you knowing about it first.
Work has to be carried out with reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. This is the standard we work to, and it’s why we test before we quote rather than guessing.
We also send photo and video updates while your car’s with us, so you can see what’s actually happening rather than just taking our word for it.
Cardiff has the busiest roads in Wales, and stop-start driving takes more out of a gearbox than most people realise. Long queues on routes like Newport Road, Cowbridge Road and the A48 mean more time spent riding the clutch or sat in ‘drive’ with the engine idling, exactly the kind of driving that wears out clutch packs, synchros and automatic fluid faster than steady motorway miles would.
Cardiff’s roads carried an estimated 1.98 billion vehicle miles in 2024 alone, according to Department for Transport figures, and city driving means far more gear changes per mile than a steady motorway run. With Wales’ default 20mph limit now covering most residential roads, that’s even more true on the school runs and back streets than it was a few years ago.
Hillier parts of the city such as Rhiwbina, Thornhill, Caerphilly Mountain and the roads up towards Radyr add extra strain too, with more gear changes and more load on the transmission during hill starts. Cardiff’s older housing estates and back streets also have their share of potholes, and a hard knock can occasionally damage a gearbox mount or driveshaft alongside the more obvious suspension damage.
We collect from right across the city, and we do a lot of work for drivers in the CF14 postcode area including Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Heath, Llandaff North and Gabalfa. We also serve many customers in Grangetown, Canton, Cardiff Bay, Splott, Tremorfa, and Pontcanna.
Not every gearbox problem needs a full replacement. Once we’ve diagnosed the fault, there are usually three routes. These are:
Repair – if it’s a specific part, like a solenoid, seal, sensor or clutch pack, we can often fix just that, which is usually the cheapest option.
Recondition – a reconditioned gearbox is stripped down, rebuilt with new or tested parts and tested before it goes back in. We don’t carry out reconditioning work ourselves, but where it’s the right option for your car, we’ll point you towards a specialist who does.
Replace – if the gearbox is too far gone, or the cost of repair doesn’t stack up against the value of the car, a replacement unit is usually the more sensible option.
We’ll talk you through what’s realistic for your specific car, based on its age, mileage and condition, rather than pushing you towards the most expensive fix. If replacing the gearbox is likely to cost more than the car is worth, we’ll tell you that too.
Gearbox costs vary a lot depending on the fault, the type of gearbox and the make and model of car, so we won’t carry out any work until we’ve agreed a price with you. Here’s a rough guide of the pricing you can expect, with actual quotations varying depending on the make and model of your vehicle:

No work starts until you've agreed the cost
On parts and labour.
We can collect straight from your door, saving you the stress of sorting a lift back home!
We only recommend what the car genuinely needs. If a smaller repair will fix the fault, we’ll say so. We don’t udnertake any work without gaining your consent first.
Absolutely. Servicing your gearbox helps prevent wear and tear of the gearbox and minimises the risk of requiring costly repair work down the line.
Full gearbox replacement usually takes 2-3 days.
We really would not recommend it. Driving around with these issues will only exacerbate the problem and put your vehicle at risk of more damage.
We utilise advanced diagnostic tools at our Cardiff Garage to help us determine the root cause of your issue.
