Joe managed to book my car in straight away and carried out a really thorough inspection before purchase. He even sent me a detailed video of the underside (something I’d never normally get to see), talking me through everything clearly and in a way I could understand. He also gave it an extensive test drive and ran full diagnostics to check for any hidden issues. The communication was outstanding, the service above and beyond, and the pricing very fair. He explained the problem to me thoroughly, setting-out details of the work to be done, together with a cost estimate (which was a really accurate prediction). The work was carried quickly and efficiently. Typically, timing chains give a few indications they need to be looked at by a mechanic. The classic one is a metallic rattle for a second or two when you start the engine from cold, easing off as the oil pressure comes up. It often starts quietly and gets a little louder over a few weeks.
Other signs to look out for include:
An engine warning light, sometimes on and off at first
Rough idling, or the engine feeling like it’s stumbling
Misfires, or a loss of power when you accelerate
The engine turning over longer than usual before it starts
A whining or whirring noise from the front of the engine
None of these proves the chain has stretched. A worn tensioner, low oil, a failing pulley or a completely unrelated fault can all produce a similar noise. That’s exactly why the first step is a proper diagnosis to ensure we’re not wasting your time and money on a replacement that isn’t necessary.
A timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning in step with each other. That timing is what opens and closes the valves at the right moment. When the chain stretches or a guide breaks up, the timing drifts.
At first you get the symptoms above. The engine runs, but not properly. Fuel economy drops and the warning light comes on. If ignored for long enough, it can cause serious issues as the pistons and valves end up in the same place at the same time. That bends valves, damages pistons and can crack a cylinder head.
At that point, you’re not looking at a chain kit anymore; you’re looking at a rebuilt or replacement engine, which usually costs several times as much as just getting the issue resolved when it was originally identified.
Once we have inspected your vehicle, we will advise on the next best steps. We always prefer the least expensive option on the table; however, sometimes a full replacement is required to protect your engine’s health and longevity.
Cardiff is a car-heavy city. It has the highest level of car access of any of the UK’s core cities, and Department for Transport road traffic figures put it among the busiest of them for traffic volume. The distance driven on Cardiff’s roads climbed by around 19% in the decade to 2019, according to analysis by Centre for Cities.
Most of that is short-distance driving. The school run to Canton, the trip down to Cardiff Bay, a few miles in and out of Grangetown. On a journey that short, the engine oil often never gets fully up to temperature. Moisture and fuel don’t burn off, the oil thins and degrades faster than the service interval assumes, and the chain, tensioner and guides all rely on that oil for lubrication and for hydraulic pressure.
We see the effect of this type of driving on timing chain systems. It’s usually not one big failure. It’s an engine that has done a lot of short, cold journeys on oil that was left in a bit too long.
The single most useful thing you can do is keep the oil changed on time, or a bit earlier if your driving is mostly short trips. A regular oil and filter change is considerably cheaper than a chain
We remove the covers and ancillaries to reach the timing assembly, then inspect the chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets. Wear patterns here often tell us why it happened, not just that it did.
If a replacement is required, we replace the chain along with the related components in the kit. We time the engine in alignment with the manufacturer’s data using proper locking tools, rather than lining it up by eye.
Old oil in a chain-driven engine often carries debris, so it tends to come out during replacement. When this is the case, it’s collected by a registered waste carrier, as required by Natural Resources Wales of garages in Wales.
Once the replacement is complete, we recheck for fault codes, then road-test the car before you get it back. We only hand the vehicle back over when we’re 100% certain the job is a success. We back this with a one-year guarantee on parts and labour.
We offer a free collection and drop-off service for all our customers! Whether you’re at home or work, we can collect your Audi, carry out the required work, and return it once complete.
We don’t carry out any work without first agreeing on a price with you. This ensures you’re not the victim of any nasty, unexpected bills when you come to collect your vehicle.
You’ll be regularly kept updated on your vehicle's status and provided with everything in plain English, no techncial jargon.
12 months on parts and labour. Any issues, bring the vehicle back and we will take a look free of charge.
A cold-start rattle is a reason to investigate, not proof of anything. We confirm it three ways: we read the stored fault codes, we look at the timing deviation figures the engine’s own management system records, and we physically inspect the timing system. Those three together tell us whether the chain has stretched and what needs to be done to rectify the issue.
The quote covers the chain kit, the chain and its related components. It also includes fresh oil and the labour to do the job.
Please note that the price can change, and we’d rather be upfront about when. Timing chain work means opening the engine, and occasionally that reveals damage nobody could see beforehand, usually where a fault has been left running for a while. If that happens, we stop. You get a video showing what we’ve found and a figure for the extra work. If you’d rather not proceed, that’s your call.
We don’t do work you haven’t approved and then add it to the final bill. All pricing is provided up front, so there are no nasty extras waiting for you when you come to collect the vehicle.
It depends on the engine. Some are reasonably accessible, others need a lot stripped off before you can reach the chain, and parts availability varies by model. Give us a call with your registration, and we’ll give you a realistic estimate for your car rather than a number that suits everyone and nobody. We don’t offer courtesy cars. Instead, we collect your car and bring it back when it’s done, free of charge, across Cardiff and the surrounding areas.
12 months, covering both parts and labour. If the same fault comes back within that time, bring the car to us and we’ll put it right.
No, and it’s worth knowing which one your car has. A cambelt is a rubber toothed belt with a set replacement interval, usually somewhere between four and six years or a set mileage. A timing chain is metal, runs inside the engine and is lubricated by the engine oil. It’s designed to last much longer, and there’s no fixed interval for changing it. If your car has a belt rather than a chain, you want our cambelt replacement service instead. Not sure which you’ve got? Send us the registration, and we’ll tell you.
We’d advise against it. Although you’ll still likely be able to drive, ignoring the warning signs can risk damaging your engine, which is extremely costly to resolve.
Depends on our availability and how much work needs to be done. Give us a call to discuss your issues, and we can provide a rough estimate of how long the work will take and our availability.
