EXCELLENT Based on 88 reviews Posted on Google Beth SoperTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fantastic service! Mini Cooper went in with what I thought was one issue but actually turned out to be quite a fair bit more… despite the work being far more than I had originally thought Joe was super quick and efficient and diagnosed and fixed all issues. He even sent across a video when the car was up on the ramp, talking us through the problems and showing us so we had an understanding of what was going on. Joe was super friendly and very professional, especially as a young woman it’s never a task I look forward to going to a garage…but Joe was really lovely and made the whole thing very straight forward. My mother in law works at a local school and had mentioned his garage after taking kids there for a show and tell day as he was wonderful to the children too. Top guy and I would recommend his garage to anyone! Diolch 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Posted on Google Stuart WatkinsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great service from Joe. Managed to fit my car in at short notice, gave a fair quote before work started and sent video update to show the failed parts in situ. Thanks again, would highly recommendPosted on Google aly wongsterTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. 10/10 can’t fault joey and his efforts to do a good job and keep the customer updated in the loop. Did all the work I needed quick and with ease and for a reasonable pricePosted on Google Peter JamesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I booked my Jaguar F-Pace in for a service and I found Joe to be professional from start to finish. He got to work on the car immediately and sent me a detailed video of everything that needed doing ie. replacement of brake discs/pads, filter, oil etc. He also sent me a clear figure of cost before starting so there were no hidden extras. Later, I received and updated recording showing all the works completed. The car was then ready to be picked up on time. Joe is friendly and honest with a nice demeanour and I would highly recommend! Thank you.Posted on Google Lizzie 122Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I messed up date of my MOT and Joe squeezed me in 2 days later. What an ace. I love that he collects car and drops it back and lets me know what's happening and discusses options. He is punctual, presentable and really personable. He was recommended to me by my brother in law and now my family also use him. What a trustworthy mechanic and all round good guy. Would recommend highly.Posted on Google Ti feeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. 1st service at Law-Fix today for my mini hatch. Did a full service which cost £200 plus vat. Very accommodating and explained all he did and even sent a whatsapp video showing tyres all round as id asked him to check for me. Lovely guy. Highly recommend. Will go back for sure.Posted on Google Arosh WijepalaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I was recommended Law-Fix by a friend when I was having issues with my car's air conditioning, and I couldn't be happier with the service I received. From the moment I first called Joe to the completion of the work, he was incredibly polite, professional, and genuinely helpful. His customer service is absolutely top-notch and easily among the best I've experienced. During our first conversation, Joe took the time to explain the possible causes of the issue I was experiencing and the different approaches they could take to diagnose and fix it. When I brought the car into the garage, he once again walked me through exactly what they were going to do, explaining everything in detail in a friendly, approachable manner that immediately put me at ease. Throughout the repair process, Joe kept me updated on the progress, which I greatly appreciated. I had actually experienced this same issue before, and Joe was able to explain what may have been done incorrectly during the previous repair, giving me confidence that the problem was being properly addressed this time. Joe is an amazing human being—friendly, courteous, approachable, and clearly passionate about helping his customers. On top of that, their charges are very reasonable, especially considering the level of service and expertise provided. This has genuinely been the best experience I've had with a garage so far. I won't be going anywhere else for my future car repair needs. I would absolutely recommend Law-Fix to anyone looking for honest, knowledgeable, and customer-focused service.Posted on Google Charith BandaraTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 100% Highly recommended! I found Law-Fix Automotive after doing my own research online reading through reviews carefully before choosing where to take my car and I'm so glad I did. It absolutely lives up to everything people say about it. Josef and his dad were both incredibly welcoming, professional, and genuinely passionate about their work the kind of father-and-son team that makes you feel like you're in the best possible hands from the moment you walk in. The service itself was top-notch, but what really set them apart was something I've never experienced at any other garage: Josef kept me updated throughout the entire job with real-time video updates. No waiting around wondering what's happening with your car he sent video footage showing exactly what was being done and why. It felt completely transparent and honest and gave me real peace of mind. The whole experience was friendly, efficient, and stress-free. It's rare to find a garage where the technical skill matches the customer care so perfectly. Law-Fix Automotive has earned a loyal customer in me. If you're searching for a garage, you can truly trust do your research, read the reviews, and you'll keep landing on the same answer: this place. Highly recommended 👌☺️Posted on Google Andrew JoyceTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joe was absolutely brilliant. He fitted me in with very short notice. As an independent gearbox specialist in Cardiff, we handle the full range of transmission work in-house, on manual and automatic cars alike. Here’s a breakdown of the gearbox services we offer Cardiff drivers:
Gearbox diagnostics – we start most jobs with a proper diagnostic check: reading fault codes, checking fluid condition, inspecting for leaks and taking the car for a road test where it’s safe to do so, so we know what we’re actually dealing with before recommending any work.
Gearbox repairs – not every fault means starting again from scratch. Where the issue is a worn seal, a faulty sensor, a clutch pack on a DSG, or a valve body problem, we can often repair the affected part rather than replace the whole unit.
Gearbox servicing – regular servicing, including fluid and filter changes, helps both manual and automatic gearboxes last longer and shift more smoothly.
Gearbox replacement – when a gearbox is too far gone to repair sensibly, we can fit a replacement unit. If you’re looking for an automatic gearbox specialist in Cardiff specifically, we work on DSG, CVT and torque-converter automatics as often as manual boxes, covering most makes and models on Cardiff’s roads.
Whatever the fault, we’ll explain your options honestly before recommending the most expensive route.
A failing gearbox rarely goes wrong without warning. Common signs to look out for include:
Gears slipping, or the engine revving without the car picking up speed
Grinding, whining or clunking noises when changing gear
A burning smell after driving, especially in traffic
A gearbox or transmission warning light on the dashboard
Difficulty selecting a gear, or the car jumping out of gear
Delayed or jerky gear changes, particularly on automatics
The car dropping into limp mode and losing power
Manual and automatic gearboxes tend to show different symptoms. A slipping clutch pack or harsh shifts are common on automatics and DSGs, while grinding or a high, vague biting point often points to wear in a manual box. Either way, the earlier it’s looked at, the more options you’ll usually have. If you’re noticing any of these, it’s best not to keep driving on it if you can help it.
When you get in touch, we’ll ask for your registration, the symptoms you’re noticing, any warning lights on the dash, and whether the car can still be driven safely.
From there, our process usually looks like this:
Fault code scan – reading the transmission control unit for stored fault codes.
Fluid and leak check – checking gearbox fluid level, condition and looking for leaks.
Road test – where it’s safe, we take the car out to feel how it’s actually behaving.
Written finding – we explain what we’ve found, in plain English, before recommending a repair route.
If the fault needs a closer look, such as removing the gearbox or stripping it down, we’ll contact you and agree the cost before doing any further work. Nothing extra gets added to your bill without you knowing about it first.
Work has to be carried out with reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. This is the standard we work to, and it’s why we test before we quote rather than guessing.
We also send photo and video updates while your car’s with us, so you can see what’s actually happening rather than just taking our word for it.
Cardiff has the busiest roads in Wales, and stop-start driving takes more out of a gearbox than most people realise. Long queues on routes like Newport Road, Cowbridge Road and the A48 mean more time spent riding the clutch or sat in ‘drive’ with the engine idling, exactly the kind of driving that wears out clutch packs, synchros and automatic fluid faster than steady motorway miles would.
Cardiff’s roads carried an estimated 1.98 billion vehicle miles in 2024 alone, according to Department for Transport figures, and city driving means far more gear changes per mile than a steady motorway run. With Wales’ default 20mph limit now covering most residential roads, that’s even more true on the school runs and back streets than it was a few years ago.
Hillier parts of the city such as Rhiwbina, Thornhill, Caerphilly Mountain and the roads up towards Radyr add extra strain too, with more gear changes and more load on the transmission during hill starts. Cardiff’s older housing estates and back streets also have their share of potholes, and a hard knock can occasionally damage a gearbox mount or driveshaft alongside the more obvious suspension damage.
We collect from right across the city, and we do a lot of work for drivers in the CF14 postcode area including Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Heath, Llandaff North and Gabalfa. We also serve many customers in Grangetown, Canton, Cardiff Bay, Splott, Tremorfa, and Pontcanna.
Not every gearbox problem needs a full replacement. Once we’ve diagnosed the fault, there are usually three routes. These are:
Repair – if it’s a specific part, like a solenoid, seal, sensor or clutch pack, we can often fix just that, which is usually the cheapest option.
Recondition – a reconditioned gearbox is stripped down, rebuilt with new or tested parts and tested before it goes back in. We don’t carry out reconditioning work ourselves, but where it’s the right option for your car, we’ll point you towards a specialist who does.
Replace – if the gearbox is too far gone, or the cost of repair doesn’t stack up against the value of the car, a replacement unit is usually the more sensible option.
We’ll talk you through what’s realistic for your specific car, based on its age, mileage and condition, rather than pushing you towards the most expensive fix. If replacing the gearbox is likely to cost more than the car is worth, we’ll tell you that too.
Gearbox costs vary a lot depending on the fault, the type of gearbox and the make and model of car, so we won’t carry out any work until we’ve agreed a price with you. Here’s a rough guide of the pricing you can expect, with actual quotations varying depending on the make and model of your vehicle:

We only recommend what the car genuinely needs. If a smaller repair will fix the fault, we’ll say so. We don’t udnertake any work without gaining your consent first.
Absolutely. Servicing your gearbox helps prevent wear and tear of the gearbox and minimises the risk of requiring costly repair work down the line.
Full gearbox replacement usually takes 2-3 days.
We really would not recommend it. Driving around with these issues will only exacerbate the problem and put your vehicle at risk of more damage.
